Something About Us

Cohen Associates is a well established architectural firm founded in 1973 by Deborah J. Cohen and Henry Allen Cohen, both Registered Architects in Pennsylvania. Cohen Associates is a Women-Owned-Business and is registered as such. The firm is a professional design organization possessing the qualifications necessary to respond to every level of architectural responsibility.

We have been located at 927 North Second Street in historic mid-town Harrisburg for the past fifteen years in a restored Townhouse. We occupy all three floors and have a fully networked computer system with cadd, internet and specification writing capabilities.

Before coming to Harrisburg, Henry Cohen worked in New York City for several hospital consultants/architects. He was involved with the design of the Industrial Hospital and Banco Populare both in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico, the M. W. Kellogg Company Research and Development Laboratory and the Texaco offices and executive yacht in Duri Duma, Sumatra. Once in Harrisburg, Henry worked with Lawrie and Green Architects, in charge of an addition to the Dauphin County Home and Hospital.

Deborah Cohen worked in New York City for William B. Tabler Architects who specializes in hotel and motel designs and for Daniel Schwartzman, a specialist in retail store design. Working with Tabler Architects, she was involved with the design of the bedroom floor plans and designed the penthouse suites in the New York Hilton Hotel. Before she and Henry founded Cohen Associates Architects, Deborah designed the office layouts for the renovations to the State Finance Building in Harrisburg.

Cohen Associates recognizes the fact that our clients are the foundation of our business and we are dedicated to serving them promptly and successfully. An important corporate goal for Cohen Associates has always been the development of long term, mutually beneficial relationships with our clients. Proving this philosophy is the fact that we have had so many repeat clients. These repeat assignments are a direct result of our emphasis on design, our record of providing superior cost control, compliance with performance schedules and quality of work. From initial client contact through construction observation, Cohen Associates has developed a reputation for good and practical design, problem solving and technical expertise, providing reliable and functional buildings. Each project receives the personal attention of both principals during every phase of the work.

The firm's projects have been varied and complex. They have included commercial and educational buildings, offices, medical facilities, religious facilities, warehouses, nursing homes, housing for the elderly, private residences, townhouses, space planning and numerous renovation and retrofit projects.

An example of previous projects is a 20,000 square foot induction center developed by Crossgates, Inc. for the General Services Administration for use by the Defense Department as a U. S. Military Entrance and Processing Station. The MEPS facility is located in the Westport Business Center in Mechanicsburg, PA. Cohen Associates was involved as Architects from initial Design thru Construction Observation, working with the developer, the consultants and the tenant.

In 2001 construction was completed for renovations and additions to Temple Ohev Sholom on Front Street in Harrisburg, PA for which Cohen Associates were the Architects. A fire when the project was 60% complete enlarged the project to include the complete restoration of the Religious School and Administration Building portion of the Complex The project recently received a Preservation Award from the Historic Harrisburg Association.

Renovations to B'nai B'rith Apartments, 130 South Third Street, Harrisburg, PA a 200 unit Apartment facility is in its final construction phase. This project consists of upgrades to this 14 floor, 37 year old building.

We are presently designing renovations to the Boyd Building of the Pine Street Presbyterian Church located at 300 South Street Harrisburg. The Boyd Building houses the Downtown Daily Bread, a facility providing a warm midday meal for those in need. The building also houses Church Offices and a gymnasium. We are also designing renovations to the former TV Host Building at 3935 Jonestown Road, Harrisburg, PA. The newly renovated building will cater to the needs of the local Vietnamese population housing a grocery store, a bakery, a restaurant, and a social center for senior citizens.
